Why am I passionate about this?

All my life, I’ve been aware that there are many layers to reality, many of which are human fabrications. Some are physical, like roads. Some are social, like healthcare. But the ones that control our lives the most, and that determine our global outcomes (poverty, war and ecological degradation for example), are ideological. The most powerful of these is our economic system. If we are to address the meta-crisis, I feel passionately that we need to be able to question and reimagine the economy. All the books I’ve chosen have been really important in helping me to think differently about things we usually take for granted.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants

Diana Finch Why did I love this book?

I love this book because of how beautiful and hopeful it is. The author pulls together amazing stories from her life to gradually weave an understanding of the meta-crisis we find ourselves in. I was captivated by the way she contrasts her family’s indigenous American culture with our modern approaches to both science and the economy.

I love Robin’s prose, which is exquisitely written. But perhaps what I value the most is the fact that she writes with optimism, giving me the courage to get up every day and think about how to put her wisdom into practice.

By Robin Wall Kimmerer,

Why should I read it?

53 authors picked Braiding Sweetgrass as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Called the work of "a mesmerizing storyteller with deep compassion and memorable prose" (Publishers Weekly) and the book that, "anyone interested in natural history, botany, protecting nature, or Native American culture will love," by Library Journal, Braiding Sweetgrass is poised to be a classic of nature writing. As a botanist, Robin Wall Kimmerer asks questions of nature with the tools of science. As a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, she embraces indigenous teachings that consider plants and animals to be our oldest teachers. Kimmerer brings these two lenses of knowledge together to take "us on a journey that is…

Book cover of Bullshit Jobs: A Theory

Diana Finch Why did I love this book?

The main thing I love about this book is that it made me laugh so much! Don’t get me wrong; it’s a really serious book about one of the worst aspects of our economic system, namely that so many of us are trapped in jobs that are either pointless (in the grand scheme of things) or actively making things worse.

I really appreciated the readable style and use of humorous terminology that made it easy to understand what might otherwise be complicated topics.

'Spectacular and terrifyingly true' Owen Jones
'Explosive' John McDonnell, New Statesman, Books of the Year
'Thought-provoking and funny' The Times

Be honest: if your job didn't exist, would anybody miss it? Have you ever wondered why not? Up to 40% of us secretly believe our jobs probably aren't necessary. In other words: they are bullshit jobs. This book shows why, and what we can do about it.

In the early twentieth century, people prophesied that technology would see us all working fifteen-hour weeks and driving flying cars. Instead, something curious happened. Not only have the flying cars not materialised, but…

Book cover of Any Human Power

Diana Finch Why did I love this book?

I love this book because it offers a thrutopian vision of how we can get from the mess we are in to a better future for humanity and planet earth. I think it’s powerful because it’s a novel that blends the spiritual realm with the all-too-profane reality of social media and political corruption.

I love Manda’s writing. I love the way she changes rhythm and juxtaposes words to really focus attention on the important points. The story itself is a compelling page-turner, and more than that, I think it might just initiate the needed change.

Book cover of Don't Think of an Elephant!: Know Your Values and Frame the Debate

Diana Finch Why did I love this book?

I love this book because it explains how important language is in framing our thoughts. It made me understand how easily we are manipulated by political and corporate messaging, and how to question the point of view that is implicit in their communications. What I appreciate the most is the tips that help me think about my language use.

Book cover of Thinking, Fast and Slow

Diana Finch Why did I love this book?

I love this book because it makes me realize how easily we humans jump to the wrong conclusions. What might seem like effortless common sense is often completely incorrect. I really appreciate gaining insight into how we assess risk and opportunity and how, as a result, we can be duped into irrational choices. I found the whole topic of the pros and cons of heuristics really interesting.

By Diana Finch,

Book cover of Value Beyond Money: An Exploration of The Bristol Pound and The Building Blocks for An Alternative Economic System

What is my book about?

My book is two things. On the one hand, it’s a history of the world’s most famous local currency, the Bristol Pound. We follow the crazy journey to getting the currency launched and then ride the roller coaster of highs and lows until the day the project finally ends.

But more importantly, this book offers an easy way in to the topic of alternative economics. Many of us feel unable even to talk about the economic system, let alone to challenge it. We listen to politicians make promises about growth and prosperity, but we can’t hold them accountable. This book aims to empower people to question and talk about the systems that determine almost every aspect of our lives.
